The choice of poison reveals a hunting strategy of remarkable sophistication. The toxins from the poison bulb are not instantly lethal. Instead, they act as a debilitating agent, causing nausea, paralysis and eventual collapse in prey. This indicates that prehistoric hunters were not relying on a single, powerful shot to kill. They were planning for a prolonged engagement.
Hunters would have needed to track wounded animals, possibly for a day or more, as the poison gradually took effect. This method, known as a persistence hunt, turns the hunter’s endurance into a primary weapon. The poison ensured the prey would eventually tire and succumb, dramatically reducing the risk to the hunters and increasing the efficiency of the chase. It represents a profound understanding of cause and effect, advanced planning and strategic forethought.
This discovery does not exist in a vacuum. It fits into a rapidly evolving picture of late Stone Age innovation. Recent studies have suggested humans in Europe used bows and arrows 54,000 years ago. In South Africa itself, stone and bone points dating back over 70,000 years have sparked debate about even earlier projectile use. The Umhlatuzana poison arrows, however, provide something those older finds lack: unambiguous, chemical proof of a complex, multi-step technological process.
